Biomass Steam Pretreatment
Lund University
Apply for support: www.treesearch.se
The infrastructure consists of three different pretreatment systems, two batch reactors (4 liter and 10 liter) and one continuous SuPR2G reactor from advance biosystems (http://www.advancebio-systems.com/advbio_prod2_research.html). All systems can be used in both acidic and alkaline conditions. The smaller reactor has the capability of indirect heating in addition to heating by direct steam injection. The characteristics of the biomass pretreatment is fast heating by direct injection of steam and fast cooldown which is achieved by a rapid decrease in pressure (Steam explosion). Typical operating conditions are between 180 degrees and 225 degrees (205 degrees in the continuous reactor). Lower temperatures can be handled.
The equipment was originally developed for producing materials or sugar solutions within the ethanol research programme, but the operation has since expanded into a wider biorefinery research infrastructure.
Additional analytical capabilities, biomass conditioning and downstream processing such as filtration and evaporation is also available.

Biomass Technology Centre

The Biomass Technology Centre, BTC, is a research pilot plant for refining of solid biomass and industrial bio-based by-products. The infrastructure is designed for pre-processing, upgrading, handling, and storage of large quantities of biomass materials and biobased residual streams. The facility provides the ability to perform reliable and representative sampling from ton to grams of heterogeneous materials and to prepare specific assortments through mechanical fractioning, sieving, milling, briquetting, and pelletizing. Specific pilot scale technologies/equipment setups are: chipping (wood), shredding (bark, agricultural, waste fractions), plane drying (wood chips), cyclone drying (sludge, etc.), hammer milling (dry biomass), log milling (wet logs), density and size fractioning, briquetting, pelleting, bulk silos for discharge and flowability analysis, pellet combustion, and ovens for thermal treatment. Drying cabinets and sample preparation mills and sieves are also available. Two full-time research engineers are providing technical support in experimental planning and are enhancing the use of larger scale equipment.

NanoSPAM is a national initiative to secure academic, industrial and public sector access to X-ray, electron microscopy and tomography techniques at the national research infrastructures MAX IV Laboratory and SciLifeLab. By establishing a network of regional hubs, at which the appropriate infrastructure and competence for sample preparation and preliminary characterization of samples is present, we aim to secure that the large investments in the two facilities in practice become truly national and are accessible to all sectors of research.
The hubs includes facilities in Umeå, Göteborg, Lund, Stockholm and RISE

Umeå Core Facility for Electron Microscopy (UCEM) is a joint resource for research and higher education in electron microscopy techniques. Electron microscopy is used for structural and chemical characterization of materials at micro and nano-meter length scales. Medical and biological samples are prepared, imaged and analyzed in 3D. Also, structure biology projects are addressed by cryo electron microscopy.
